I started looking at who serves on Copperas Cove’s boards and public organizations.
Then I noticed something: the same names kept appearing.
Former mayors. Current and former councilmembers. EDC leaders. TIRZ members. Appraisal district directors. School board connections. City commissions.
For example, former Mayor Bradi Diaz currently chairs the Copperas Cove EDC and TIRZ No. 2 and serves on the Coryell Central Appraisal District board. Fred Chavez, a former councilmember, serves with both the EDC and Coryell CAD. Current councilmembers also appear in the EDC, TIRZ and City commission structure.
None of that, by itself, means anyone has done anything wrong.
My concern is concentration.
Experience in public service is valuable. But local government also needs new people, new perspectives and meaningful opportunities for residents who aren’t already part of the established civic network.
So I think residents should see the connections for themselves.
Who serves where? Who appoints whom? Who holds multiple positions? And how often are new people getting a seat at the table?
